Worth an estimate of $69.6 billion, Uber is the most valuable US company financed with venture capital in the United States, according to the ranking produced by the US firm PitchBook, which specialises in software and financial information.
Uber, based in San Francisco and founded in 2009, is the company that has revolutionised the private transportation sector with its network of drivers in hundreds of cities around the world.
This company currently has an estimated value that doubles that of the second company in this ranking: Airbnb. According to PitchBook’s estimates, Airbnb, who offers individuals accommodation in thousands of cities around the world, is currently worth $31 billion dollars.
The company financed with venture capital that ranks third is WeWork. It was founded in New York in 2010 and is currently a global network of work spaces in dozens of cities around the world. It’s worth an estimate of $21 billion. In Spain, WeWork is currently present in Barcelona and Madrid.
Fourth in the ranking is SpaceX, the aerospace transport company founded in 2002 by one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs, Elon Musk, co-founder of companies such as Tesla Motors, PayPal and SolarCity. SpaceX is estimated to be worth $20.8 billion.
Some of the 20 most valuable US companies financed with venture capital are not as well-known as the top four in the ranking. Thus, the fifth place is for Palantir, a software company located in Silicon Valley which specialises in big data analysis and with a current estimate market value of $20.5 billion, according to PitchBook.
In sixth place, we can see a well-known company again: the social media Pinterest. It’s worth an estimate of $12.3 billion.
Samumed biopharmaceutical ($12 billion), Uber’s rival Lyft ($11.7 billion), the online business platform Stripe ($9.2 billion) and Moderna biotechnology ($7 billion) are included in the top ten positions in this ranking. The following graph shows the 20 companies which are estimated to be worth most according to PitchBook.
PitchBook’s ranking doesn’t include Dropbox because it’s in the process of becoming a listed company. There are three companies that have not been included –Theranos, Outcome Health and Zenefits– which could have been among the first 20, but the analysts at PitchBook have decided not to include them due to various recent problems, considering it highly unlikely they have maintained their worth.
