Barcelona, with 20.33 million overnight stays, led in 2016 the list of Spanish cities with the highest number of overnight stays, according to data provided by the Urban Indicators report recently published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Barcelona managed to overcome the city of Madrid in 2016, second in the ranking with 19.84 million overnight stays. In the previous year, Madrid had occupied the first position in this ranking with 19.29 million overnight stays. In 2015, Barcelona added 19.23 million overnight stays.
The third Spanish city with the highest number of overnight stays in 2016 was Benidorm, in the province of Alicante, with 16.54 million.
The rest of the cities in this ranking are already below the 10 million overnight stays per year. The fourth is Palma de Mallorca, with 8.93 million, and the fifth Torremolinos (Malaga), with 5.73 million. Sevilla (5.53 million) and Valencia (4.6 million) occupy the following two positions.
Among the first 15 cities in this ranking there are 9 provincial capitals: Granada, Malaga, Alicante and Zaragoza are added to the aforementioned Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Seville and Valencia.
In addition, in the ranking there are 6 cities that are not provincial capitals. Four of them –Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Marbella and Fuengirola-belong to the province of Málaga. The other two are Benidorm (Alicante) and Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz).
