The total population of the European Union (EU) on January 1st, 2018 was 512.6 million people, 2.1% more than the previous year, according to the latest figures provided by Eurostat.
This increase in the population, which in absolute numbers was 1.1 million, was due to the arrival of immigrant population, since the natural evolution of the EU population was negative: more deaths occurred (5.3 million) than births (5.1 million).
By country, Germany is the EU member with the largest population: 82.9 million, representing 16.2% of the EU total. Spain ranks fifth in the EU population ranking, with 46.65 million inhabitants (9.1% of the total).
