Victoria Cirlot was born in Barcelona in 1955. Currently, she is a professor of Romance Philology at the Faculty of Humanities of the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, and the director of a Doctorate in this university. She dedicates herself to studying the middle Ages: chivalric and mystical culture. Translator of several Arthurian novels of the 12th and 13th centuries from old French, such as Perlesvaus or El alto libro del Grial [The High Book of the Grail] (published and re-edited several times by Siruela) and also troubadour lyrical poetry (Jaufré Rudel, El amor de Ionh [John’s Love], Columna, Barcelona 1998). Among her books on Arthurian novels, it is worth noting Figuras del destino. Mitos y símbolos de la Europa medieval [Destiny’s Figures. Myths and Symbols of medieval Europe], Siruela, Madrid, 2005. In the field of medieval mysticism, she has focused on Hildegard von Bingen (Vida y visiones de Hildegard von Bingen [Life and Visions of Hildegard von Bingen], Siruela, Madrid, 1997-2006), and other mystical female writers (La mirada interior. Escritoras místicas y visionarias de la Edad Media [The Insight. Mystical and Visionary Female Writers in the Middle Ages], Siruela, Madrid, 2008, in collaboration). She has written extensively on the visionary phenomenon with comparative studies of the middle Ages and the 20th century: Hildegard von Bingen y la tradición visionaria de Occidente [Hildegard von Bingen and the Visionary Western Tradition], Herder, Barcelona, 2005, and La visión abierta. El mito del Grial y el surrealism [Open View. The Myth of the Grail and Surrealism], Siruela, Madrid, 2010).
